Homework
30 -40 minutes is the recommended time for completion
of homework in third class.
Physical Education:
During the first term in 3rd class, children engage with the “Aquatics” strand of the curriculum. This affords the children the opportunity to visit the local swimming pool each week for a period of 6 weeks. Lessons are based on children’s individual abilities thus enabling them to acquire specific skills at their own pace. The school has been awarded an Active School Flag and active schools week is held every June. During this week children participate in yoga, zumba, tennis and cricket to mention but a few. School sports day is also held in June.
Guided Reading:
Children work in differentiated reading groups and partake in daily reading practise and comprehension using novels and PM readers under the guidance of class teachers.
Accelerated Reader:
Children use the school library to access books tailored to their own reading level. Quizzes may be taken at home and at school.
Ipads/Spheros/Computers:
As part of the STEAM initiative children have access to ipads and spheros using educational apps which develop problem solving and coding skills.
Maths:
The following areas are an integral part of the maths curriculum and taught for the first time in third class. Multiplication and division, 5 minute intervals in analogue and digital time, decimals and fractions (eights and tenths)
Choir/Trad Group:
Third class children are given the opportunity to join both the choir and the trad group if they so wish. Both groups perform at various school events during the year.
Student Council:
At the beginning of the year third class children have the opportunity to become part of the student council. This is a forum which gives students an opportunity to represent their class in matters relating to the schools decision making process.
